Pet-Friendly Apartment Living Need-to-Knows

Here at IRET Properties, we offer a number of pet-friendly apartments throughout our different markets. While not all of our apartment communities allow pets, we understand the importance of finding the perfect apartment rental for you and your furry friend—after all, many of us are animal lovers ourselves.

What You Need to Know About Renting with a Pet at IRET Properties

If you’ve already moved into your apartment, before you get an animal, any kind of animal, talk to your apartment Community Manager to be sure that the apartment you live in is one of our pet-friendly complexes. If you have your heart set on getting a pet before moving in, make sure you only commit to leasing one of our pet-friendly apartments to avoid having to choose between your pet and the costs associated with breaking a lease and finding a pet-friendly apartment. Although our pet policies vary from complex to complex, we love pets as much as you do and hope to find the best apartment for you and your pet.

If you haven’t chosen one of our pet-friendly apartments yet, finding the perfect one is easy to do. Simply check this listing of all our pet-friendly apartments, and then follow up with that apartment’s Community Manager to check whether they accept cats, or dogs within that apartment complex.

Each pet-friendly apartment complex has slightly different policies that you should ask about. Double check allowances for which pets our apartments welcome, what the refundable pet-deposit amount and monthly pet-fee is, as well as what kind of cleaning costs or renter responsibilities are required to accommodate your furry friend, as well as your neighbors.

In most cases, our pet-friendly apartments have fewer requirements and fees for cats or small dogs living in your apartment, but make sure to discuss the different aspects with your Community Manager. In all of our pet-friendly apartments, though, your one allowable pet may not exceed a maximum, full-grown weight of 30 to 50 pounds, depending on the property, or be one of the unacceptable breeds outlined in our pet-policy.

Regardless what kind of pet lives with you in your apartment, as the pet’s “parent” you are responsible for the health and safety of the pet—as well as that of other tenants, visitors and neighborhood residents. This means you must take proper health precautions for your animal including spaying/neutering and regular vaccinations.

As many of us at IRET Properties can attest, owning a pet is more like being a parent than like buying a new car. There are emotional, time and financial commitments needed to properly care for your pet. Occasional mess are the norm, be prepared to lose at least one pair of shoes and remember that you won’t be able to stay away from home for long periods of time without arranging doggy daycare or for someone to care for your pet.

Your daily routine can change significantly once you move into your pet-friendly apartment, but the heart-warming feeling of returning home to your pet’s excited greeting is one thing that can rarely have a value put on it. It’s one of those occurrences that reminds you, this is home.
